WE RISE MURAL

I painted this mural on the side of my house in June 2020. The original design was simple - several large scale poppies. In the midst of a global pandemic and in the wake of George Floyd’s death, the world is both crumbling and awakening at the same time. How will we look back at this time? How will we rise to the occasion as the winds call us toward action and change? I thought about Maya Angelou’s inspiring poem “Still I’ll Rise”. We cannot ignore the social inequities in our society any longer. We must rise and shift and evolve. As each one of us rises we become a powerful force for change - we all rise. We lift each other up when we lift ourselves up. That is how change happens- first on an individual level and then collectively it grows.
