Street Tweaks is a collaboration between Asheville On Bikes, AARP, and Blue Ridge Bicycle Club, and on this project - Art of Belonging. I had the opportunity to design this intersection to make it safer and more accessible to bikers and pedestrians. I wanted this project to involve public input, so we created a survey for local residents to talk about their sensory experiences in the area. This spot is known for its birds and foliage. There used to be a wonderful and whimsical garden near the intersection, called Christopher’s Garden, full of art and plants. There were several blue bottle trees in the garden. I took these ideas from our survey participants and designed this street mural. We painted it in a couple of scorching days with the help of the community using large scale stencils cut out at STEAM Studio. Not only is it aesthetically pleasing, but it helps motorists slow down and allows bicyclists and pedestrians to feel safe in this spot.
