Craft For a Greater Good (CGG) is a project of the Furniture Society, an organization I have had the excellent oppotunity to work with beginning in 2020. The goal of Craft for a Greater good is to use making in service to a larger cause. The Furniture Society convenes each year to talk nerdy about furniture. At one conference, members came to the concensus that they wanted to get out of their solo studio environments and use their skills to serve commmunities. This program of the Furniture Society became known as Craft for a Greater Good.

In Spring of 2021, I was able to help facilitate our first collaborative CGG project with BeLoved of Asheville, STEAM Studio, and the Furniture Society. Students at STEAM learned about the housing crisis in Asheville, worked with Artists in Residence Annie Evelyn and Ellie Richards, and designed and built custom storage units for the tiny home. We installed them in May of 2021. This project will continue into the Spring of 2022 as we introduce a new group of students to this valuable community and ask them to build outdoor furniture for the village.
